I wrote Tessellations during my second year of composition study. I hear myself exploring dynamic interactions between instruments and focusing on the flute, clarinet, and piano, each playing an equal role in the music from start to finish. Performers have described playing Tessellations as if they were playing a game of tag. I’m also reminded of my love of knitting and crocheting, as the gestures almost sound like stitches woven into a cohesive tapestry of sound. Although it was an early piece for me, Tessellations left a lasting impression on my musical style, and I see so much in here that I am still playing with to this day!
