Text

by Geoffrey Nutter

Mountains, valleys, deserts,
flowers, trees, and children,
listen: today is the first day
of spring. A big ball of shadow
is sitting on the grass. And this
ball is casting another shadow,
a bigger and more shadowy
shadow. Gather round us, hills,
lakes, rivers, and children,
and all strange new land forms,
make way for the grapes
and their timely arrival,
do not obstruct them with
your selfish plans for summer,
your fears of winter. A vast
countryside with towers round
and square, O come you birds
and green insects, fruit trees
and brooks, the world is weaving
its dark ball of newness.
