People-watching: We all love to do it, and it is this very activity that inspired— or rather, provoked—a search for texts by some of the most influential American writers of poetic literature, to see how these figures observed strangers in various contexts. FACES is composed of several basic motives that evolve and adapt to paint the texts of these four poems, each unique in its emotional arc and use of language. I've accessed a highly personal interpretation of these texts, imagining scenarios for each in order to capture the tone, resulting in a cycle of four musically independent songs. The bassoon bridges a timbral gap between voice and piano, drives or restrains melodic and harmonic motion, and at times illustrates a formal narrative.
